Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers about hard chrome plating, precision grinding, quoting, and working with Masterchrome.
Hard Chrome Basics
What is hard chrome plating?
Hard chrome plating (also called industrial chromium plating) is an electroplating process that deposits a layer of chromium onto a metal component for engineering purposes — wear resistance, corrosion protection, low friction, and dimensional restoration. Unlike decorative chrome, it's applied in thicker deposits and valued for performance, not appearance.
For a full plain-English explanation of how the process works, read our guide: What Is Hard Chrome Plating?
What's the difference between hard chrome and decorative chrome?
They share the same metal — chromium — but serve completely different purposes:
- Hard chrome is a thick, functional engineering coating applied directly to steel and other base metals. It exists to make industrial components survive wear, friction, and corrosion.
- Decorative chrome is an extremely thin layer applied over nickel for cosmetic shine on consumer items — bumpers, wheels, faucets, trim.
Masterchrome provides industrial hard chrome only. We do not offer decorative plating.
Do you chrome plate automotive parts, wheels, or household items?
No. Masterchrome provides industrial hard chrome plating services only. We cannot work on automotive parts (bumpers, wheels, exhaust tips, trim), motorcycle parts, bicycle parts, household fixtures, plumbing, or any decorative/consumer items.
If you need decorative chrome plating, please search for a decorative plating shop in your area.
What specifications do you plate to?
We plate to recognized aerospace, military, and industrial specifications, including:
- AMS 2406
- AMS 2460
- AMS-QQ-C-320
- MIL-STD-1501
- EES 6.8-1
If your drawing calls for a specific standard, include it with your quote request and we'll confirm.
How thick can hard chrome be applied?
Typical deposit thicknesses range from 0.0001" (thin dense chrome) up to 0.030" and beyond for heavy buildup and dimensional restoration. The right thickness depends on your application, tolerance requirements, and whether the part will be finish-ground after plating.
Quotes, Capabilities & Rework
How do I get a quote?
Three ways: call (416) 667-1077, email info@masterchrome.ca, or use the quote form on our contact page.
To quote accurately, we need:
- A description of the part and what it does
- Dimensions (and weight for larger parts)
- Quantity
- Base material
- The service required (plating, grinding, stripping, etc.)
- Any specifications, tolerances, or drawings
How long will my job take?
Turnaround depends on the size and condition of the part, the work required, and current shop volume. Contact us with your job details and timeline and we'll confirm current lead times. For time-sensitive work, call us directly at (416) 667-1077.
What's the largest part you can handle?
Capacity depends on the combination of length, diameter, weight, and the service required. Include your part dimensions and weight in your quote request and we'll confirm whether it fits our equipment.
Can you restore worn or damaged parts?
Yes — dimensional restoration is one of the most common uses of hard chrome. Worn shafts, rolls, cylinders, and other components can be built back up with chrome and precision ground to original drawing dimensions, often at a fraction of replacement cost.
Can you strip and replate chrome applied by another shop?
Yes. Our chrome stripping service removes existing chromium deposits in a controlled process that preserves the base metal — including parts originally plated elsewhere. After stripping, parts can be properly prepared and replated to specification.
